Pseudanthias pictilis, also known as the Painted Goldie, is a captivating specimen of anthias. Once widely regarded as THE anthias to have in your reef, both males and females of this species exhibit stunning coloration. Their anterior body is dominated by a vibrant fuchsia pink, creating a showstopping appearance. Here are some key details about the Pictilis Anthias:

  • Coloration: The Pictilis Anthias showcases a pinkish-blue body with a large blue oval on the caudal fin. The rear third of their body is adorned with bright orange-red hues. Males tend to be more vibrantly colored than females and lack the yellow coloration.

  • Size: As one of the larger anthias species, the Pictilis Anthias can reach a maximum size of 6 inches. While a 125-gallon tank is sufficient for a single fish, maintaining a group may require a larger tank, such as a 180-gallon setup or even larger for optimal success.

  • Habitat and Behavior: These anthias prefer a tank with multiple hiding places and caves, mimicking their natural habitat. Found in moderately deep waters, they initially prefer lower lighting conditions. Like other anthias, they are hermaphroditic, with the largest female morphing into a dominant male if needed. Their diet should include a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched frozen brine shrimp, and high-quality flake foods. An attached refugium cultivating copepods and amphipods ensures a steady supply of nutritious live food.

In summary, the Pictilis Anthias adds a burst of color and elegance to marine aquariums, making it a prized addition for reef enthusiasts.
