The Green Mandarin Goby (Synchiropus splendidus) is a stunning tropical fish native to the warm Pacific waters between Japan and Australia. Also known as the Mandarin Dragonet, Striped Mandarin Fish, or Psychedelic Mandarin, this fish stands out for its vibrant green body adorned with intricate blue and orange patterns. Here are some key details about this captivating species:

  • Appearance: The Green Mandarin Goby has an elongated body shape, large eyes, and ornate fins. Its brilliant green coloration is accented by swirls and spots of orange and blue. The red eye against its lighter green head is particularly distinguishable.
  • Size: In adulthood, these gobies typically reach up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. They are relatively shy and slow-moving, often hiding among rocks and coral while patrolling for food.
  • Behavior: Mandarin gobies are active yet slow-moving, using their two large pelvic fins to “crawl” along the seafloor in search of food. They are best suited for experienced aquarists with well-established tanks due to their dietary needs and space requirements.
  • Tank-raised vs. Wild-caught: When selecting a Mandarin Goby, inquire whether it was wild-caught or raised in a tank. Tank-raised fish adjust better to home aquariums because they are already conditioned to the simulated diet provided.
