The Orange-fin Anemonefish (Amphiprion chrysopterus) is a captivating marine fish found in the Western Pacific. Here are some key details about this species:

  • Distribution: It inhabits the Western Pacific north of the Great Barrier Reef, ranging from the surface down to 20 meters. Its range includes the Pacific Ocean between Queensland, Australia, and New Guinea, extending to the Marshall and Tuamotus Islands.
  • Size: The Orange-fin Anemonefish can grow up to 17 centimeters (about 6.7 inches) in length.
  • Appearance: Its body is short and deep, with yellow edges transitioning to yellow-brown or dark brown in the middle sides. Two white vertical stripes adorn its sides—one behind the eye and the other before the anus. The fins are yellow to orange, and juveniles exhibit a dull orange color. Interestingly, tail fin coloration varies based on the fish’s origin; for instance, those from Fiji and Tonga have yellow tails, while those from the Marshall and Solomon Islands have white tails.
  • Symbiosis: Like other clownfish, the Orange-fin Anemonefish forms a symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. The anemone provides protection from predators, and the clownfish reciprocates by defending the anemone. They also feed on scraps from the anemone’s meals and dead tentacles. Fascinatingly, clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites, transitioning from males to females as they mature.
  • Diet: Their diet includes planktonic copepods, algae, echiuroid and sipunculoid worms, and pelagic tunicates.
  • Breeding: Orange-fin Anemonefish are oviparous, with distinct pairings during breeding. The adhesive eggs adhere to the substrate, and males diligently guard and aerate them.
