Pomacentrus vatosoa, also known as Corazon’s Damselfish, is a captivating reef fish discovered off the coast of Madagascar. Let’s dive into the fascinating details of this remarkable species:

  1. Appearance:

    • Unlike most other damselfish, the Corazon’s Damselfish stands out with its pearly white overall coloration.
    • It features a dark eyestripe that extends into a black dorsal fin.
    • Two black spots on its body and caudal peduncle resemble a pair of eyes.
    • Interestingly, it is related to another new species from Madagascar, Pomacentrus atriaxillaris, which has a more typical silvery grey body color.
  2. Etymology:

    • The name “vatosoa” means “beautiful stone” in Malagasy, alluding to the opalescent or pearlescent qualities of this fish in life.
    • This fish was named after Mrs. Corazon Shutman, wife of Barnett Shutman founded of RVS Fishworld.
  3. Habitat and Behavior:

    • Corazon’s Damselfish inhabits the reefs around Nosy Faho, Madagascar.
    • It displays a tough nature and intriguing behavior.
    • Molecular studies and morphological examination revealed that it belongs to the genus Pomacentrus, not Chrysiptera as previously thought.

In the colorful underwater tapestry, the Corazon’s Damselfish adds a touch of elegance and mystery!
