Stonogobiops dracula, also known as the Dracula shrimp goby, is a captivating species of goby native to the reef environments around the Seychelles and the Maldives. Let’s delve into the intriguing details of this enigmatic fish:

  1. Appearance:

    • The Dracula Goby boasts an exquisite coloration that sets it apart. Its body is a pristine white, a rarity in the aquarium hobby.
    • What truly captivates the eye are the thick bands of deep oxblood red, alternating with slender stripes of reddish-orange. This unique combination places Stonogobiops dracula in a class of elegance all its own.
    • When fully grown, it reaches a size of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 inches.
  2. Habitat and Behavior:

    • In the wild, Dracula Gobies inhabit relatively shallow reefs near the base of reef structures. They prefer open sand areas dotted with rubble.
    • Like other Shrimp Gobies, they dig shallow burrows in sandy substrate and rarely stray far from their claimed territory.
    • These watchful gobies perch on the sand just outside their burrows or hover in the water column directly above the burrow entrance.
    • Ever vigilant, they keep an eye out for both predators and prey. If danger approaches, they swiftly retreat into their burrows for safety.
    • Dracula Gobies also form symbiotic pairs with pistol shrimp, often favoring Alpheus randalli as their burrow mate. To foster this relationship, introducing both species simultaneously is recommended.
  3. Peaceful Coexistence:

    • While generally peaceful, Dracula Gobies may spar with similar species or defend their territory against more aggressive fish.
    • In a suitable aquarium of at least 10 gallons, they coexist harmoniously with non-predatory fish.
    • Their diet consists of mysis shrimp, other frozen meaty foods, suitable phytoplankton, and flake foods. Feeding them multiple small meals throughout the day mimics their natural feeding behavior.
  4. A Touch of Mystery:

    • Dracula Gobies remain mysterious and captivating, much like their namesake. Their striking appearance and symbiotic relationships make them a sought-after addition to marine aquariums.

Next time you explore the depths of your imagination, picture these elegant Dracula Gobies dancing among the coral reefs, their colors weaving tales of oceanic enchantment!
