Nemateleotris helfrichi, also known as Helfrich’s Dartfish, is a captivating species native to the Pacific Ocean. Let’s dive into some intriguing details about this vibrant fish:

  • Description: These small dartfish grow up to a maximum length of 6 centimeters (2.4 inches). Their striking appearance includes a bright yellow head with a purple forehead, complemented by purple and white shades on their body. They possess seven dorsal spines, 28-31 dorsal soft rays, one anal spine, and 26-28 anal soft rays.

  • Distribution and Habitat: Helfrich’s Dartfish inhabit the Pacific Ocean between latitudes 16°N and 28°S. Their range extends from Indonesia to the Tuamotu Archipelago. Unlike other Nemateleotris species, they prefer deeper waters and are typically found swimming a few meters above the seabed. Rarely, they venture above 40 meters (130 feet) in depth.

  • Diet: These carnivorous dartfish primarily feed on zooplankton, amphipods, copepods, small crustaceans, and shrimp larvae. Interestingly, their bright coloration may fade if their dietary requirements are not met.

  • Behavior: Helfrich’s Dartfish are monogamous and are usually found in pairs. They are territorial and will engage in fights with conspecifics unless they form a pair. When threatened, they seek refuge in small caves.

  • In the Aquarium: Due to their vibrant colors, they are popular choices for marine aquariums. However, they are more delicate and rare compared to other firefish species. Marine aquarists with intermediate expertise or higher are recommended to care for them. The specific name honors Philip Helfrich, an Emeritus Director and Researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and the director of the Eniwetok Marine Biological Laboratory, who collected some of the first specimens of this species.
