Sacura margaritacea, also known as the Cherry Anthias or Sakura Anthias (meaning “Cherry blossom” in Japanese), is a captivating marine fish found in the coastal waters of Japan and throughout small portions of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Let’s explore more about this remarkable species:

  • Appearance: The Cherry Anthias exhibits a striking color pattern. Its genus name, Sacura, refers to its red coloration, reminiscent of a cherry fruit. Adult males have white pearlescent spots on their sides, adding to their allure. These fish can grow up to 6 inches in standard length (excluding the caudal fin and filaments).

  • Habitat: You’ll find them on rocky reefs at depths ranging from 75 to 200 feet (23 to 61 meters). Their natural environment contributes to their unique coloration and behavior.

  • Life Cycle: Like most anthias, they are protogynous hermaphrodites. As they grow, they transform from juveniles into functional females. Under certain environmental conditions, they become males. The dividing size between females and males is approximately 4.5 inches 1.

  • Aquarium Care: The Cherry Anthias is arguably the hardiest member of the anthias group, as long as their basic needs are met. They tolerate a wide range of temperatures (from 48°F to 82°F). Feeding is straightforward; they enjoy a variety of meaty seafood items, including superba krill, sliced smelt, squid pieces, and diced shrimp. Juveniles require smaller food items like brine shrimp and mysids.

  • Availability: While rare in the aquarium trade, a few of these fish have entered the United States market from Japan. Due to their origin in a highly developed country, collectors and shippers will always require higher compensation for these fish, and transport costs remain high.

If you’re seeking a centerpiece for your aquarium, the Cherry Anthias—with its vibrant colors and intriguing behavior—will certainly captivate your underwater world!
