The sea goldie (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), also known as the orange basslet, lyretail coralfish, or onestripe goldie, is a captivating marine fish found in the Indo-Pacific region. Here are some key details about it:
-
Appearance:
- Female: Up to 7 cm (2.75 in) in length, with an orange/gold color and a violet streak below the eye.
- Male: Up to 15 cm (5.9 in) in length, fuchsia-colored, with an elongated third ray of the dorsal fin, a red patch on the pectoral fin, and elongated tail margins.
- Habitat: Sea goldies live around coral outcrops in clear lagoons, patch reefs, and steep slopes down to 35 meters (115 feet). They often form large schools above the reef, sometimes alongside Chromis dimidiata.
- Diet: They primarily feed on zooplankton.
- Reproduction: Sea goldies are protogynous hermaphrodites. A male retains a harem of 5 to 10 females, but when the male dies or leaves, the largest and most dominant female undergoes hormonal and physical changes to become the new male. Spawning occurs at sunset between December and February in the Red Sea.
