The McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) is an attractive reef-safe wrasse that’s sure to be the star of your aquarium. Here are some key details about this colorful fish:

  • Appearance: The vibrantly colored male McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is predominantly red/orange with blue, horizontal stripes that complement its yellow stomach. The orange dorsal fin is accented with red, yellow, and blue, featuring a single elongated ray. A gorgeous red band across the orange anal fin creates an impressive and bold color palette. The females have a more subdued appearance and lack the large dorsal and anal fins.

  • Size: These wrasses can grow up to 3¼ inches in length.

  • Habitat: McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is often found along reef slopes and rubble zones in the Indian Ocean, from East Africa to Thailand and northern Sumatra. They inhabit depths ranging from 5 to 40 meters (16 to 131 feet).

  • Tank Requirements: To keep this species, you’ll need a 55-gallon aquarium (or larger) with a tight-fitting lid, as they are known jumpers.

  • Behavior: Males tend to form small groups, swimming back and forth between groups of females. During courtship, the colors of adult males intensify, and they may “flash” their fins to attract females. It’s recommended to have only one male per aquarium display.

  • Diet: Feed them vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. High-quality marine flake and marine pellet food are also suitable.

Remember to provide a suitable environment for these beautiful wrasses, and enjoy their vibrant presence in your reef tank!
