Hoplolatilus oreni, also known as the Oreni tilefish, is a stunning and incredibly rare species of tilefish. Recently, it was photographed alive for the first time, and its appearance is nothing short of mesmerizing. Let’s dive into the details of this elusive fish:

  • Appearance: The Oreni tilefish grows to a maximum size of 8 inches. Its body is torpedo-shaped, and it boasts a blue metallic zigzag line that runs mid-body, starting behind the head and ending at the base of the caudal fin. Above the midline, there are scattered spots forming a broken blue line against a bronze background, giving it an ethereal presence.

  • Habitat: This rare tilefish is found in the western Indian Ocean, specifically in the Eritrean waters near Massawa, the Red Sea, and now, thanks to recent discoveries, along the entire east coast of Africa. It resides at depths ranging from 18 to 80 meters. Despite its elusive nature, we’re fortunate to have glimpsed this beauty through underwater photography.

The Oreni tilefish remains a mystery in terms of its behavior and lifestyle, but its rarity and captivating appearance make it a true gem of the ocean. 🌊🐠
