Pseudojuloides atavai, also known as the Atavai wrasse, hails from the French Polynesia. While it is rarely seen in the trade, it has made more frequent appearances in recent years due to collection stations in Tahiti. Unlike other predominantly green-based members of the Pseudojuloides genus, male P. atavai exhibit a unique two-toned coloration that vertically separates down the middle. These wrasses are truly exquisite in their appearance, and both sexes display attractive features:
- Female Atavai wrasses have a brilliant bicolored white and deep orange color, diagonally bisected by a thin black and electric blue stripe.
- Male Atavai wrasses become dark black overall while retaining the bright orange color on the dorsal part of the body. Their heads and anterior portions also sport a degree of orange vermiculation, creating a striking contrast.
These slender wrasses are captivating additions to marine environments and can be a fascinating sight in large saltwater aquariums.
