- Description: The Acanthurus leucosternon has an oval-shaped, laterally compressed body. It reaches an average length of 23 centimeters (9 inches). Its sides are blue, the dorsal fin and base of the caudal fin are yellow, and the head is black. The mouth, throat area, anal fin, and pelvic fins are white. The pectoral fins are transparent with yellow reflections. The intensity of its blue color indicates its health.
- Behavior: These fish are herbivorous, primarily feeding on benthic algae. They are diurnal, solitary, territorial, and can be aggressive toward other surgeonfish. When food is scarce, they may compete individually for it. Interestingly, they have a “surgeon’s scalpel,” an erected spine near the tail base, which they can use defensively.
