The queen angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is one of the most striking fishes found in the western Atlantic coral reefs. Its large, flat body boasts brilliant blue coloration with vivid yellow-accented scales and a bright yellow tail. Here are some fascinating facts about it:

  • Appearance: Adult queen angelfish exhibit a stunning combination of blue and yellow hues. They have a distinctive spot or “crown” on their forehead, which sets them apart from the closely related Bermuda blue angelfish (Holacanthus bermudensis) with which they overlap in range.
  • Habitat: Queen angelfish thrive in warm-water coral reefs, residing on the ocean floor. Their vibrant colors make them a captivating sight for divers and snorkelers.
  • Feeding: These selective feeders primarily consume sponges. Their social structure consists of harems, including one male and up to four females. The male tends to the females within their territory, where they forage separately.
  • Breeding: Breeding occurs near a full moon, and the transparent eggs float in the water until they hatch. Juveniles of the species have different coloration than adults and even act as cleaner fish for other species.
