Hoplolatilus randalli, commonly known as Randall’s tilefish, is a captivating reef fish found in the warm waters of the southwestern Pacific. Let’s dive into the fascinating details of this delightful underwater resident:

  1. Appearance:

    • Randall’s tilefish showcases a stunning blend of colors. Its body transitions from tan to greenish, with a yellow hue towards the rear.
    • The head and pectoral-fin base are a brilliant blue, creating a striking contrast.
    • Juveniles of this species are adorned in a captivating sky blue shade.
  2. Size and Habitat:

    • These tilefish typically reach a maximum length of approximately 15 centimeters (about 5.9 inches).
    • They inhabit gentle rubble slopes and construct impressive rubble mounds over their burrows. These mounds can be up to 70 centimeters in height and 2 meters in diameter.
    • Randall’s tilefish are often seen hovering near their home mound, with multiple individuals sharing a single mound.
  3. Behavior and Care:

    • Randall’s tilefish are docile and somewhat shy. When keeping them with other fish, especially more aggressive ones, caution is advised.
    • They prefer a substrate that allows them to burrow, such as sand, coral pieces, and shells. Creating secure spaces for them to dig holes is essential.
    • These fish revel in swimming, so an aquarium with ample space is necessary.
    • During transportation and acclimatization, they are sensitive, especially when introduced as juveniles.
    • Dimmed light during acclimatization helps mimic their natural environment.
  4. Discovery:

    • Randall’s tilefish was newly described in 2010 by ichthyologists Gerald Allen, Mark V. Erdmann, and Alison M. Hamilton.
    • The samples were collected from various locations, including the Banda Islands and West Papua.
