Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis, also known as the Red Velvet Fairy Wrasse, is a captivating species of wrasse native to the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. These vibrant fish inhabit mesophotic reefs at depths ranging from 41 to 70 meters (135–230 feet). Their striking appearance adds a burst of color to underwater ecosystems.

  • Appearance:

    • The male Red Velvet Fairy Wrasse boasts a front body that is red, transitioning to yellow towards the rear. As it matures, dark edges appear on the scales near the head.
    • In contrast, the female exhibits more subdued coloring compared to the male’s brilliance.
    • During courtship, the male may turn almost white on the sides to impress its mate, showcasing a delightful color-changing display.
    • Keep in mind that their hues can vary based on their mood.
  • Behavior and Compatibility:

    • These wrasses are peaceful and active, making them excellent additions to fish-only or reef aquariums.
    • Remarkably, they won’t bother corals or invertebrates, making them ideal for reef setups.
    • However, be cautious—they have a tendency to jump, so a secure lid is essential.
  • Diet:

    • Feed them a varied diet, including vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods.
    • High-quality marine flakes and pellets are also suitable.
