Richmond’s wrasse, also known as the chain-lined wrasse, is a fascinating fish species native to the central Indo-Pacific. Here are some key details about it:

  • Description: Richmond’s wrasse is a small fish that can reach a maximum length of 19 cm. It has a thin, elongated body with a terminal mouth and a more pointed snout than other wrasses in the genus Halichoeres. The body coloration varies with age. Juveniles have a light blue-green background with orange stripes and two black ocelli (eye-like spots). Mature males exhibit a greenish body with chain-like blue lines on their fins and a concave head profile.

  • Distribution & Habitat: This wrasse is widespread throughout tropical and subtropical waters in the central Indo-Pacific, ranging from Indonesia to the Philippines and from the Solomon Islands to southern Japan. It inhabits shallow waters, including lagoons and channels rich in soft coral, down to a depth of 12 meters.

  • Behavior & Diet: Richmond’s wrasse lives and feeds in small loose groups. It’s a benthic predator that primarily consumes small marine invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, worms, and echinoderms found on or in the substrate.

  • Reef Aquariums: In reef aquariums, Richmond’s wrasse is popular but infrequently offered. Females and juveniles display pale green coloration with orange stripes and two false eye spots. Males have iridescent blue lips, fin edges, and smooth blue stripes on a burgundy face.
