Spanish Hogfish

The Spanish hogfish (Bodianus rufus) is a striking species of wrasse found in the western Atlantic Ocean. It ranges from North Carolina and Bermuda through the Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico and southern Brazil. These colorful fish inhabit coral or rock reefs at depths ranging from 1 to 70 meters (3.3 to 229.7 feet). Despite its name, the Spanish hogfish isn’t actually found in Spanish waters; it’s more commonly seen in the Atlantic region. With its slender yellow body and a purple field covering the upper half of the front end, this fish is a captivating sight for divers and snorkelers alike.
