The Unicorn Tang (also known as the Blue Spine Tang or Unicorn Fish) is a fascinating saltwater fish found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Here are some key details about this majestic creature:
- Size: Adult specimens can reach almost 24 inches (61 cm) in length.
- Tank Size: They require at least a 250-gallon tank (946 liters), preferably larger, to allow for adequate swimming space and water quality.
- Appearance: Their bodies range in color from gray to brown, sometimes with striped or spotted designs. Most notably, they have an elongated horn projecting from their forehead, which gives them their name.
- Behavior: Unicorn Tangs are constantly on the move during the day and need a larger tank for swimming space.
- Diet: They are primarily herbivores, feeding on marine algae (nori). Having lots of live rock in the tank provides grazing opportunities between meals.
- Compatibility: While they should play nicely with other non-tang species, avoid keeping them with other species of tangs.
- Breeding: Breeding in captivity is very difficult.
- Lifespan: They can live up to 10 years or longer.
- Origin: Found in the Indo-Pacific, Hawaii, and the Red Sea.
