Macropharyngodon vivienae, also known as the Madagascar Leopard Wrasse, is an intriguing fish that is believed to be endemic to the reefs of Madagascar and parts of the East African coastline from Natal to Durban.
The juvenile specimen pictured here is a mere 2 inches (5 cm) long, yet it already provides hints as to why it might eventually be called the “flame leopard wrasse”. As male Vivien’s leopard wrasses mature, they develop a brilliant yellow base coloration, with their red-spotted scales gradually turning almost entirely red. The red streak beneath the eye intensifies with age, as does the fine vermiculated pattern on the head and above the eye. Truly, this fish blossoms into its own unique beauty.
Remember, this remarkable wrasse is a true gem of the ocean, and its presence in the aquarium world is a cause for celebration!
