  • Description:

    • The rainfordia boasts an overall dark orange color, adorned with six black-margined lilac stripes along each flank. The orange hue is darkest at the center of the flanks, fading to yellow on the back and belly.
    • Its dorsal fin spines are yellowish, with a transparent membrane between them. The second dorsal fin features a dark base and a wide-angled yellow band near its edge. The anal fin displays a similar pattern.
    • Eye-catching Features: A black, blue-edged eyespot graces the base of its tail. Additionally, its forward-set eyes and wide mouth contribute to its unique appearance.
  • Distribution:

    • Originally thought to be endemic to Australia, the rainfordia has been found off the coast of Western Australia, from Kendrew Island in the Dampier Archipelago to Kimberley, and in eastern Australia from the northern Great Barrier Reef to reefs in the Coral Sea, extending as far south as Moreton Bay in Queensland.
    • Surprisingly, it was also recorded in the Raja Ampat Islands of West Papua, Indonesia in 2019.
  • Habitat and Behavior:

    • The rainfordia prefers inshore waters, seeking refuge in caves and crevices within coral reefs. It tends to be solitary.
    • This species is a true gem of the ocean, captivating marine enthusiasts with its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. While rare in the wild, it has been successfully bred in captivity, making it a prized addition to aquariums.

The rainfordia’s striking appearance and elusive nature continue to intrigue those who encounter it.
